I’m re-reading Phil Gordon’s The Little Green Book. Gordon, one of the more famous faces on World Poker circuits has a trilogy of books out about poker and this is the first in that series.
Actually, I said re-reading but truth is I listened to an audio version of it the first time around. I only learned how to play poker about a year and a half ago and I learned from Annie Duke’s( http://www.twitter.com/therealannieduke) video series. Then the first book I picked up was this one.
Now that I understand poker a WHOLE lot more than I did back then, I am going back through this one and seeing why I liked it the first time around. Poker players will get a lot of this book for several reasons.
Let me say here, that Gordon is an aggressive player. A bit opposite to say Kid Poker in the respect of limping vs. constant raising and so not all his tips will fit my game style but I still learn a lot from what he is saying and what he says works as proven by his record.
The thing that I like about Gordon’s books is that he constantly gives hand analysis. There’s only one other poker writer I’ve come across that gives more. Gordon gives percentages, what they’ll stack up against and shows how sometimes a lesser hand is more powerful than you think.
Gordon is also heavy in discussing different betting strategies. When you bet and how you bet being two of the most important decisions you’ll make in a hand. That sounds simple but you’d be surprised how many players don’t think of it in those terms.
If you want some serious hand by hand breakdowns and deep discussions on what kinds of bets work where during a game, then this book is a must read for you. I can’t imagine a poker player not getting something useful from this book. If nothing else, it will add some edge to your game.
