Since I’ve been back in the States this week, I’ve noticed a few things. Some important and some oh, probably not so important. Here is a short rundown:
1. The influence of Michael Jackson is way overrated. Can anyone name a single band that will name him as their major influence? Sure he had some good songs but his real legacy is choreographed videos/dance numbers. We like Thriller but we like the video of Thriller more. I’m pretty much sick of the wall to wall coverage this is getting on the news. It’s ridiculous.
2. But the above may be to cover that American tv is just awful! I swear, they are showing the same movies etc. on tv that they were a month ago when I left. Quite pitiful considering tv is one thing that we use to be really good at. And news, forget it. I got better coverage when I was overseas. Not sure CNN, MSNBC, FOX etc. know what real news is anymore. And personally, I think the airing of Larry King, Nancy Grace, Dick Morris, Keith Obermann, Anderson Cooper, constitutes crimes against humanity and those responsible should be prosecuted.
3. My stomach is having trouble re-adjusting to the American diet. I miss my falafel, shawarma, French cheese, and everything else delicious I had to nibble on while I was gone.
4. I miss the walking. We are so car oriented here in the States that walking down a flight of stairs constitutes a major workout as opposed to walking 20 minutes to get somewhere in Tel Aviv 10x a day or walking for an hour after midnight in Brussels to get home *lol*. My body keeps saying, ‘let’s walk somewhere’. *sigh*.
5. I’m having trouble concentrating on coversations. Everything seems a bit frivolous to me at the moment.
6. I think my writing will be my saving grace. It’s the only thing I seem excited about at the moment and I’m actually motivated in that area.
7. My poker playing has improved. I was in a bad rut the couple weeks leading up to my trip and not playing well at all. Since I’ve been back, I’m playing much more confidently and better. Not sure why but I am glad.
Just a few observations about my little corner of the planet since I’ve been back. The only thing to add is that I’m missing everyone already.

Hi, i think that u gonna have to move to Tel Aviv (:
it was your first time in here, in Israel?
I can really understand why u like it here so much, i know i told u it’s hard to live here, but i really don’t see my self living anywhere else!
I have been living in the u.s for 5 months 10 years ago, and you r so right, bad food, lazy people, can’t go nowhere without a car, i didn’t like it at all, nice place to visit, thats all.
Hang in there, everything will be fine, try to do fun things and u will be fine (:

Naama- Thanks for the support
No, I’ve been to Israel several times but it’d been a few years between trips this last time mainly due to family crisis etc. Yeah, I tried to explain to a friend here today what I was going through and he just looked at me like ‘what are you talking about?’. Fortunately, the writing project I’m on does excite me and for me the challenge of that is ‘fun’.
And actually, it reminds me of a conversation I overheard on the plane home. An American girl was complaining that she hated Rome because you had to walk, too many scooters (I’d love one),- “And they actually drove up on the sidewalk, can you imagine?” – language problems etc. Since I’ve been to Rome (not as nice as France but worth a trip) I knew there was nothing to complain about. Then she proceeded to talk about planning to go to Central America and I was like ‘Lady if you hated Rome…’
Yeah, I will be spending the next couple months getting things ready to make a change. It’s time.

Aww, you poor thing, getting back from any holiday is a bummer but for you I guess it’s even harder.
I agree with you on the MJ business. People forget all the fucked up shit he did and comemorate him like he was a hero. It’s so fony.

Meirav-
Yeah, the guy obviously had some severe mental hangups. He also took himself way to seriously. The Jacksons all did. You ever listen to him in an interview and it was always some deep philosophy about how great what he was doing was. Compare that to the Beatles or a Bob Dylan or somebody (two people MUCH greater in the Music World) who if they did an interview couldn’t go 2 minutes without joking about themselves or a heavy dose of sarcasm. As you say, it is so phony.

I’d guess that the reason for your poker improvement is the amount of walking you did in Europe.
Using the ability our kind has honed over the last couple of million years improves the blood flow to all parts of the body, including the mind, and is certainly involved in increasing mental awareness and acuity. That will always help with keeping the cash flow going in the proper direction.
America’s obsession with walking no more than a few feet at a time may also explain point 2.

Galen-
You might be right about that. A lot of pro players do make an effort to have regular workout routines which is actually double important considering you might be sitting at the table for 8-10 hrs any given day. And you’re probably right about pt. 2 also
Thanks for stopping by!
